A Lesson for life!!!

Nature elixirs for vitality are all around us if only we have eyes to see them

I think you should view life as one big coconut, hard on the outside soft on the inside, the hard shell is your point of view attitudes, and environment you live in.

Never does nature say one thing and wisdom another,

The powerful yields to the gentle they both benefit!!

only man in his infinite arrogance confuses the two and often misses the truth!!

The gift of life natural rain water

This truth and clarity of mind is also called Enlightenment !!

This is a symbol for Harmony" the marriage of yin and yang forces!!

The soft nutritious part on the inside is your personality, your positive attitude, and flexible in  mind and body that allows you to adjust to any situation, and adapt and overcome  them. This is achieved by dispersing the build up of  too much negative  energy and stress with a positive solution and vitality.

This is a example of each one teach one !!!

The key to a full life is to discover a way to crack that coconut called life; and enjoy the nutritious soft inside called vital living. And now you have discovered the right  tools, for life you can teach others how to use it.

Then  the joy and peace of mind  that comes  sometimes by  sharing , will reveal this in its innate wisdom. Thereafter,  the truth and clarity can be passed on to  anyone that wishes to use it.

we are as much alive as we keep the earth alive!!

     Have a great day.

Wisdom of the ages 8 tenants of Taijiboxing

FourSeasons080500079

** listen to this as you read   06 Unbroken Flow

The 8 principles for Taijiboxing and a healthy lifestyle

Taijiboxing as both a Art form and a philosophy for life has 8 basic principles which when properly integrated into your personality gives a perfect treasure chest of wisdom and knowledge to deal with the ever turbulent ride that we call life.

Just like in nature the ancient Taoist observed that running water is never stagnant or putrid.  Likewise we should observe the Tao and be as free flowing as a stream constantly adjusting to the underlying  and surrounding terrain.

The first principle is: PATIENCE :

"Patience through stillness and motion"

The state or quality of being patient; the power of suffering with fortitude; uncomplaining endurance of evils or wrongs, as toil, pain, poverty, insult, oppression, calamity, etc.

But like in the practice of taijiquan as both art form and a martial discipline you must endeavor to practice regardless of the outcome. That is to say that, the dedication and the discipline is the reward in it self  and as it was said ” He  who laughs last, laughs longest”, patience is a virtue that is rarely ascertained.

Patience is a virtue that most often never attained!!

The second principle is:   Practice:

"Practice patience and discipline is the fuel for a "True Art Form"

Systematic training by multiple repetitions; “practice makes perfect”

Translating an idea into action; “A hard theory to put into practice”.  Skill or dexterity acquired by use; expertness:

Actual performance  is the application of knowledge  as opposed to theory.

Systematic exercise for instruction or discipline;.[Websters   definition].

This incorporates a individuals application of knowledge , willpower and conviction to overcome a obstacle through consistent  patience.

The Third is:Perseverance

If a first you don't succeed stability in motion try try again Perseverance!!

The steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties,   obstacles, or discouragement. this is the pinnacle to all personal enlightenment applying this in daily life make the world a brighter place. this in my opinion combination with hope is the light of the world.  it is said that the great sage s believed that  “In the midst of adversity all is clarity”.
 The Fourth is: Persistence

Persitance is the key Patience is the way, somtimes obstacles seem larger than life!!

Continued progress in a course of action without regard to difficulty, past failures, or opposition.

Energy and persistence conquer all things.

Benjamin Franklin

Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.

Napoleon Hill

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

Calvin Coolidge

These quote outline one of the few quality that can not be copied you must develop this trait, and make it part of who you are.

This is number Five:   Practicality.

He who hesitates has lost, sometimes the element of surprise is the best defense

This is exhibited in, or obtained through practice or action: Practical knowledge; usable, workable or useful and sensible: Practical proposals  relating to, or governed by, and acquired through practice and action, rather than just theory. Speculation and ideals can be  gained through the practical experience of .. life.

This refers to the implementation of knowledge ,experience and wisdom combined with adaption and innovation to make a idea concept technique or theory usable.

In the field of martial arts as within our daily life”s , many thinks may sound practical but are not necessarily feasible.      Many techniques form some of the traditional martial arts and may have seemed practical  some 20 yrs ago.

But not in  today’s environment application of that hidden ancient knowledge is now widely common knowledge.

Due largely to technology, and the world wide web  making information available form all over the world with the    internet.

Therefore; It  is much harder now a day for a female to say” knee a male attacker in the groin” than it might  have been 20 yrs ago, when the technique was not so commonly known or  employed.

This is number 6    Pliability.

Roundhouse hook kick ,two opponents one move, stability in motion!

The quality or state of being pliable;

Flexibility, ie  supple enough to bend freely or repeatedly without breaking  : yielding readily to others :

This is what is meant by having a” flexible mind and body and a calm free flowing spirit”.

It is not rigid and can easily adapt conform and expand as necessary to maintain its structure.

A truly form less form.

This is number 7   Progressive.

softness subduing hardness, the water erodes the mountain.

Moving forward; advancing.  Proceeding in steps; continuing steadily by increments: progressive change. Promoting or favoring progress toward . Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.

Moving forward; proceeding onward; advancing; evincing progress; increasing; as, progressive motion or course; — opposed to retrograde.  Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.

Many people  have  the idea that progress always means something brand new, and that new is always better.

I think there is very little knew under the sun, and it is only a matter of man’s arrogance to think we have some thing “Brand knew”.

Most theories are based on something they already have some knowledge off, and may have even forgotten.

Mindful observation and wisdom makes for a greater appreciation of life, with age comes patience and with Patience wisdom.

"Wave hands like clouds" action and Inaction stillness and motion universal harmony!!

Wisdom”  is a innate gift that most of us never actualize because society tells us it is for a chosen few, experts genius, scientist, billionaires. but we all have the  capability to  access what used to be know as “common sense” but I think few of us may  remember how

Maybe we have become to reliant on the artificial information technologies as opposed to our own intuition.

But we are just people, and all  share  the same human frailties, and unique  qualities.

As they used to say in the olden days, “Necessity is the mother of invention”.

The difference only real difference between a Leader and a Follower  is luck, and opportunity??.

No matter what the “ Tabloids may try to say about self made Millionaires”

“just a thought!!!

This is number 8     Potential.

Practice ,patience persistence, pliability ,progression, and potential everything is possible

    1. That has power; potent
    2. That can, but has not yet, come into being; possible; latent; unrealized; undeveloped
    3. Gram. expressing possibility, capability, power, capable of development into actuality

The idea of potential is the greatest gift and secret know to mankind. since the origin of the species and the organization of the planet the potential or”Dunamus”, inherent power of the human being  may well be limitless!!

The problem is that we are limited by our own capabilities, we have a huge reservoir  for potential but due to today’s lifestyle and attitudes are somehow disconnected form the keys.

The door to this freedom may lie in the wisdom of the ages, the meditative practices of Buddhism, and the Taoist breathing and balance approach to food and respecting the planet.

This suddenly is being  “Noticed” by our great directors of the planet the so called “Scientific communities” .

The idea of a more synergistic approach to life on this planet, and the introduction to a concept of a sustainable planet .This stark reality is being  noticed by  Scientist and global suffering, through  mass starvation(Africa) and mass migration of people.

We are also  noticing devolution and the loss of too many species too quickly in quantum proportions.

This might suggest the Human  population is too large for what the planet can sustain  and we are running quickly running out of sustenance(Food and  living space).   Our habitat is quickly being eroded, and if we do not wake up and act now,Return to the natural Tao,we will cease to exist.

Finally we may begin to understand our human heritage as  merely care takers  of the planet.

With time let us hope this message  may finally be hitting home….

This idea of ” Harmony” and that of more “care takers” than simply” taker “  I hope will lead people back to a more balanced approach to living and things like Taiji and Yoga will be a normal part of life.

In the midst of stillness all is clarity, natures gift of meditation!!

Just like taking care of yourself, the planet, and of course paying bills and taxes.

I hope by applying some of these principles not only to your Taiji Practice but to your daily life will bring peace.

Harmony, Vitality and freedom of spirit in a sometime roller coaster world will help you  on  your daily journeys.

Peace and be well. I hope you enjoy my ideas, and can utilize some of the concepts toHave a better day!!  and  thanks for reading this I hope you enjoyed It.

 PEACE sifu Dennis pounall.

Effective Communication

Taiji boxing and the art of effective communication

dennis450_003_0901

Taiji boxing is a rare and exact science, but it is also an art form because each practitioner will have their own unique method of presenting and applying its principles, both as an effective form of self defence and a method of self- cultivation and disease preventions. The principles embedded in this discipline stem back thousands of years and incorporate a belief system from Indo-Chinese histories. The premise is based in two complementary philosophies, Taoism and Buddhism.

Taoism was developed along time ago, around the 6th century B. C.. E Lao Tzu is considered to be the founder of this philosophy. It is based in nature and its circadian, ecological influences, through observations, and interpretations on its effects on mankind. Taoism was based on the Taoist sage’s empirical observations and applications of natural physical laws. The major goal of all Taoist sages was to reach a state of “immortality”. This was to mean to transcend all physical and spiritual restriction and live in harmony and unity with nature. Taoism introduced the concept of yin and yang, and the theory of complementary opposite. This later included the five element theory and the eight trigrams with the development of theories for the book, “The I-Chin” or the book of changes.

Buddhism was introduced to China from India around the 6 the century by Siddhartha Gautama of the Shakhya clan, who introduced the philosophy and exercises of yoga and meditation. This philosophy focused more on internal and spiritual development, and on the concept of compassion and non-violence as a means of personal development. The higher goal is to reach a state “Enlightenment” which is to cultivate both wisdom and compassion.

These two doctrines were combined by a Taoist priest, and developed into a complex system of self- development through a martial art discipline. This is the essence of Taiji Quan and the root of Taiji boxing. Taiji boxing is both a martial art and a method of personal development. Using the principles found in the “13 powers” in daily communication can be a very effective and natural advantage to practicing Taiji boxing.

SHI San Shi (Thirteen Powers)

The thirteen powers is a term described by Master Sam Masich. It is comprised of eight trigrams in the arms and five phases in the legs.

This is a method of utilizing the principles of Peng, Lu, Ji, An, CAI, Lie. Zhou, Kao. These energies are integrated into the formless form of Taiji boxing and combined with the 5 phases Method, Central equilibrium, step left , step right, retreating step, advancing step.

As a martial art, this vocabulary is dependent on your instructor and his interpretation. Peng force is the power of resilience and flexibility, and harnesses the innate quality of spontaneous, effortless recoil… just like an elastic band!

Lu force could be likened to re-direction of energy in a downward direction… much like trying to force the same polarity of a magnet together… there is a subtle but definite shift.

Chi force is used to support the other force in both attack and defence techniques. This is like a rim and a tire… both need to be in good condition for a smooth ride with one supporting the other.

An force is the ability to listen or sensing. This gives you the advantage of limitless options for attack and defence by allowing you the advantage of being able to read your opponent’s intentions. This is like a radar early- warning system that is always scanning and reporting back information.

Tsai force is the concept of pluck and re-direct your opponent’s energy, usually towards the ground. This technique is like plucking a fruit of the tree. If the fruit is ripe, it comes off easily, but if not, it requires a decisive movement in order to achieve the same goal.

Lieh force is what is called “short Jing”. This is a form of Fa-jng that is decisive and conclusive, delivered at close range with minimal outward expression. This is like when a tire blows out on your car… there is no warning, simply a release of energy and then it is over.

Chou force is like a sudden interruption or distracting force, and is used primarily as an elbow strike or a knee strike to interrupt or disrupt your opponent’s technique balance or flow… just like an unforeseen speed bump or pot hole on a relatively smooth road or highway.

K’ao force is a subtle and elusive force, and is sometimes called ‘shoulder strike’ or bump. It is used to fill the space between two bodies and can be used as an attack or defensive move. ..but body balance and stability must be mastered in order for success.

The Five Phases (five stepping skills)

Advancing Step: This description is a conceptual idea that is based in the phrase of “to enter is to be born and to retreat is to die”. This bears the concept that to be continually retreating and in constant defence could have detrimental results in both martial arts and in life. You should seek to continually advance with care, compassion and caution in self defence as in life. Within this phase there are options such as rising step , sinking step, collecting step, curved step, slanting step, horse riding step, fairy step, pushing step, turn the body over step, Fishing step.

Retreat backward step. This is a type of break backward step and is very concise, a balance movement that conveys the illusion of retreat but not the intention of defeat as in repulse monkey. This foot work is designed to create an imaginary void that lures the opponent into a trap like a bull fighter taunts the bull to come forward carelessly…. full steam ahead.

Looking left. This is the ability to re-direct to a force on the left side and attack the right side. This involves co-ordination and timing. This is a method of distraction and deception by presenting a opening on the right side yet moving and attacking the left side.

Looking Right. This is the opposite of looking left as everything is reversed and done just as subtly. It is important to able to move in both left and right direction and not favour one or the other and be able to move both inside and outside of your opponent’s guard when attacking or defending yourself. ..just like a steering wheel is only useful with the full range of motion both turning left and right with equal ability and ease of motion.

Central Equilibrium”. This is the most difficult, yet the most essential, for Taiji boxing, the practice of Taiji Quan and Qigong. Everything begins and ends with this step. Central equilibrium contains the whole paradox of unity of mind, body and spirit, and stillness in motion and motion in stillness.

This is the Essence of Taoism and Buddhism combined to create a flexible mind and spiritual awareness, to maintain both inner calmness and outside peace.

The art of Taiji boxing and effective communication. By applying these principles found in the thirteen powers, it may be possible to avoid verbal conflict that may lead to violence or a negative interaction with our fellow man. Sometimes applying the concepts of listen, adhere, and follow answer in our daily conversation, as a continuum of Taiji push hands, can be a refreshing change to managing the stress of a break down in communication with our friends, family or co-workers.

If we employ active listening skills, such as listening with our hearts (emotional contentment and compassion), hearing with our inner ears, eye to eye, heart to heart, it may allow us to have better communication skills regardless of language, culture or religious beliefs.

Adhere and follow. If we try to stay focused and not be easily distracted or preoccupied we may be able to use a clear calm mind to decipher what they are asking, saying or meaning when they speak.

Lead connect answer. If we are still with our emotional opinions, preconceptions when dealing with others, it may provide an opportunity for spiritual enlightenment and, of course, imaginary sense of immortality which leads to compassion and sometimes kindness and caring. This way we at least provide a venue for a positive interaction.

By applying the truths found in the art of Taiji boxing to everyday interaction, it may one day help to preserve the art of spoken communication in a time of hyper electronic internet and blackberry mania. The spoken word may one day find itself extinct!

What is Taiji Quan? It is born of the Wuji, and is the mother of yin and yang, when it moves it divides, and at rest, it unites. This is a quote that was used by Master Sam Masich in his article of Taiji Quan and Jing. I believe that by getting people to move in their mind, body and spiritual cultivation may help us to see individually how we can all unite in one way or another to make a better world.

Stillness in motion

Stillness in Motion and Motion in Stillness

dennis2_300The concept of Stillness in Motion and Motion in Stillness is an age old dichotomy that has a multitude of conceptual undertones. This is one of the fundamental truths in the Taijiquan subtle mysteries, both as a discipline of martial art and philosophy for life.

The Idea of Stillness is sometimes confused with the idea of being static or void of potential. However I have a belief that upon the introduction and exploration of Taoist concept, the masters must have understood the importance of this natural precursor to absolute motion. Absolute Stillness requires inherent motion and stability which forms a functional organizational structure or form. This process allows complete random harmony resulting in the potential for absolute change and progression expressed as motion.

In the Taiji form the initial salutation is often referred as “Commencement of Taiji “. This is clarified in the classic as the state of”Wuji.” In the beginning and at the end of most Taiji forms there is a state of what appears to be “Stillness”. In this position the Practitioner stands for a few seconds or minutes motionless in a state of meditative preparedness. This in fact is an attempt to attain a state of Wuji, a state of being which is likened to formless form, or a posture that is a simple state of absolute awareness without any outward fixed attention, just to stand supple and straight, just like a oak tree or mountain.

And, like a Mountain, a tree, or a cheetah when stalking prey, all of these natural forces have the appearance of stillness, when, in fact, the potential for growth and movement are all inherent and prepared for spontaneous revelation at any given time.

dennis3_300As Taijiquan is both a martial arts and a philosophy for living, the application of these acquired skills has many advantages. The first, from a martial perspective, is to provide the illusion of being a sitting target. This misconception may cause your enemy or opponent to attack unreservedly and guardedly. This leaves no room for defense, providing the Taiji practitioner with unlimited potential for attack and defense when applying the thirteen powers.

As a philosophy, it allows you to be in a similar state of relaxed awareness. Likewise, in a situation of verbal or emotional conflict, the state of Wuji may produce a venue to resource your options… a clear, relaxed, flexible mind and spirit for life varied opportunities. In every day life, if you can attain a state of clarity through stillness, not marred by preconceptions, fears or ignorance, this allows unlimited options for conflict resolutions.

The concept of motion often refers to time, space, movement and speed. Although all these factors are relevant, I believe the Taoist had a more subtle and simple observations. In Taiji, the minute your awareness initiates a concept or “Intention” your attention is already in motion and you become aware of this by physical movement. At this point, you have discovered “Taiji”. ‘Stillness’ becomes motion and motion is the stillness. This interaction between mutually dependent opposites is what makes up the yin and yang theory of the Tao in the Taiji.

The combination and interaction of these two fundamental concepts permeates the whole practice of Taijiquan, as both a martial art and a philosophy for living. It is also an integrated self-guided method of health longevity and well being. Practice “Slow to move fast,” and “Be still and know that there is a Tao”.

These basic ideas will help to improve your Taiji practice and enhance your quality of life and well being. Peace Sifu Dennis Pounall. WWW.Taijiboxer.com
